Bhima swiftly tore a tree from the fence and went toward the cremation ground where the Kichakas had gone. Strong as he was, seizing a tree ten spans around, trunk and branches together, he ran at the sutas like Antaka with staff in hand. Under the force of his thighs, banyan, ashvattha, and kimshuka trees fell to the ground and lay there in heaps. Seeing him coming like an enraged lion — a gandharva — all the sutas trembled on every side, shaken by dismay and fear. Seeing this gandharva then, advancing like death itself, the upakichakas, who were about to burn their elder brother, said to one another, trembling with dismay and fear: 'A powerful gandharva is coming, enraged, brandishing a tree. Release Sairandhri at once: a great terror has come upon us.' Seeing the tree that Bhima was wielding, they let Draupadi go and fled toward the city. But Bhima, seeing them fleeing, like Vajrin scattering the danavas, sent a hundred and five of them to the abode of Yama. Then, having freed Krishna, the mighty-armed, unassailable Vrikodara comforted Panchali Draupadi, wretched, her face full of tears, and said: 'Thus perish those who torment you, the innocent one, timid one. Go now to the city, Krishna; you have nothing to fear. I shall return to Virata's kitchen by another way.' Those hundred and five slain, O Bharata, lay there like a great forest of felled trees. Thus were slain, O king, the hundred and five Kichakas, and before them their commander — six hundred sutas in all. Seeing this great wonder, the men and women who had gathered were struck with the utmost amazement and said nothing at all, O Bharata.

This second defense of Draupadi is no longer a hidden duel but a fearsome warning to the whole city. The innocent cannot be dragged toward death with impunity.
