श्Śrīmad-BhāgavatamThe Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavata-purāṇa) — twelve cantos that Vyāsa composed last, after the Vedānta-sūtra and the Mahābhārata. It opens with the sages asking what is the highest good for a person of this quarrelsome age, and answers not with a code of rules but with a narrative: the making of the world, the lineages and their stories, the descents of the Lord and, in the tenth canto, the life of Kṛṣṇa. ब्Vedānta-sūtraThe Vedānta-sūtra (Brahma-sūtra) of Bādarāyaṇa Vyāsa — a corpus of maximally terse aphorisms that systematizes the teaching of the Upaniṣads. Four chapters: harmonizing the texts on Brahman, answering the opponents, the path of attainment, and the fruit — liberation. This book gives the bare sūtra text with word-by-word glosses and a literary translation, without commentary; the commentaries of the principal Vedānta schools are published as separate books. The text follows the Madhva recension (564 sūtras) — the Brahma-Madhva line in which the Gauḍīya Govinda-bhāṣya was also written; schools count the sūtras differently (Rāmānuja 545, Śaṅkara 555).RUगोGovinda-bhāṣyaThe Govinda-bhāṣya of Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa (18th c.) — the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra, written in the Brahma-Madhva line. Tradition holds that it was composed in Jaipur by the blessing of Govinda Himself — the deity of Rūpa Gosvāmī — whence its name. Its teaching is acintya-bhedābheda: the Brahman of the sūtras is Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa (Govinda) endowed with countless attributes; the world is a transformation of His energy (śakti-pariṇāma), not of Himself; the jīva is His eternal separated particle; the means is bhakti, the fruit — eternal service to Him in a liberation without return. This book gives a Russian exposition of the commentary: for each sūtra, its reading per Baladeva and a condensed account of his argument. Word-by-word glosses are in the companion Vedānta-sūtra book; sūtra numbering may differ slightly from printed editions of the bhāṣya.RU

श्Brahma-saṁhitāThe Brahma-saṁhitā is the hymn with which Brahmā the creator praises Govinda after seeing His abode. Of the saṁhitā's hundred chapters one survives — the fifth: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu found its manuscript in 1512 in the Ādi-keśava temple in South India and brought it to Bengal, and since then it has been read as a book in its own right. Sixty-two verses: the structure of Gokula, the generation of the material world, Brahmā's appearance in darkness and the mantra given to him, and then twenty-eight stanzas with a single refrain — govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi, "Govinda, the primeval Lord, Him I worship." Here too are the famous verses on Kṛṣṇa as the source of all descents (5.39), on the impersonal Brahman as His effulgence (5.40), and on His being seen by an eye anointed with love (5.38). The bare text is given with word-by-word glosses, a literary translation and commentary; Jīva Gosvāmī's Dig-darśinī ṭīkā is not part of this book.RUदिDig-darśinī ṭīkā of Jīva GosvāmīThe Dig-darśinī is Jīva Gosvāmī's sixteenth-century commentary on the fifth chapter of the Brahma-saṁhitā. The name means "showing the direction": Jīva does not gloss every line to the end, he points out where to look. He opens with verses of his own, calling Sanātana his elder brother and Rūpa his refuge, and observes that the one surviving chapter stands to the whole saṁhitā as a sūtra stands to a work; then, on the first verse alone, he unfolds an entire study of the name Kṛṣṇa — with the etymology kṛṣ + ṇa and testimonies from the Padma and Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇas, the Gautamīya-tantra and the Gopāla-tāpanī — establishing what for the Gauḍīyas decides everything: Kṛṣṇa is not one of the descents but the one they come from. Each unit gives the verse and the ṭīkā, both with word-by-word glosses and a literary translation, followed by our commentary.RUवैSongs of the ĀcāryasThe bhajanas and kīrtanas Vaiṣṇavas sing daily, in temples and at home, across the tradition. These are not devotional decoration: a song was how the ācāryas taught. What a treatise would spend a chapter on, a song puts in four lines that a congregation learns by singing them. Each one here is treated as scripture is treated — word by word, a literary translation, and an explanation of what it says and why it is sung where it is.RU

श्Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhuA treatise on devotional service, written by Rūpa Gosvāmī in 1541 at the direct order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. It is the first book to set out bhakti by the rules of Sanskrit poetics: the author takes the language in which India described rasa in drama and applies it to a person's relationship with God. The work is built as an ocean: four divisions named after the quarters of the sky and twenty-three waves. The eastern division defines the highest bhakti and leads from practice through bhāva to prema; the southern analyses the components of rasa; the western describes the five principal rasas — peace, service, friendship, parental affection and love; the northern the seven secondary rasas and their semblances. More than half the book consists of verses from the Bhāgavata, the purāṇas and the pañcarātra, quoted as evidence. The reading unit is the verse, numbered by division, wave and verse.RUश्Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛtaRūpa Gosvāmī's second major work, the companion to the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: that book treats rasa, this one tattva. The first chapter states the aim — to show that among all who are worshipped, Kṛṣṇa is the chief — and settles it not by argument but by scripture: the author declares outright that he rests on śabda-pramāṇa, citing the Vedānta-sūtra on the source of knowledge and on the unsteadiness of reasoning. The book falls in two. The Kṛṣṇāmṛta (five chapters) sorts the Lord's forms into classes — svayaṃ-rūpa, tad-ekātma-rūpa with its vilāsas and svāṃśas, āveśa, prakāśa — then treats the puruṣa- and guṇa-avatāras, the līlā-avatāras, the manvantara-avatāras and their abodes, and closes with its longest chapter, which establishes Kṛṣṇa's supreme position. The Bhaktāmṛta (one chapter) speaks of His devotees, and of the worship of them standing above the worship of Him alone. More than half the text consists of verses from the Bhāgavata, the purāṇas and the pañcarātra, quoted as evidence; they carry the book's own verse numbers and so read as its own verses. The reading unit is the verse, numbered by khaṇḍa, chapter and verse.RUश्Ujjvala-nīlamaṇiRūpa Gosvāmī's treatise on the sweet rasa — love for Kṛṣṇa in the mood of the beloved. In the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu this rasa was told only in brief, "out of its secrecy" (1.2); here it is set out in full. The book moves from persons to feelings: first the kinds of the hero and his companions, the beloveds of Hari, Śrī Rādhā, the kinds of the heroine, the group-leaders, the friends and messengers, and the four camps of allies and rivals; then the whole apparatus of rasa — uddīpana, anubhāva, sāttvika, vyabhicāri and the sthāyi-bhāva with its ladder from prema to mahābhāva; and in conclusion the two divisions of śṛṅgāra: separation, with its four kinds and ten states, and union, with its particulars from seeing and talking to the rāsa and the water-sports in the Yamunā. The examples are drawn from the Bhāgavatam, the Padyāvalī, Rūpa's own plays and the messenger poems. The reading unit is the verse, numbered by prakaraṇa. The seventh prakaraṇa, on the messengers, is absent from this edition: it is missing from the source.RUश्Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛtaThe work of Sanātana Gosvāmī, senior among the six Vṛndāvana teachers, and the companion to his younger brother Rūpa's Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta: that book treats tattva, this one the path. Both khaṇḍas are built as journeys and written as narrative rather than treatise. The first, "Where the Lord's Mercy Is Fullest", follows Nārada: seeking the one to whom the Lord is most merciful, he goes from a brāhmaṇa householder to a king, from the king to Indra, to Brahmā, to Śiva, to Prahlāda, Hanumān, the Pāṇḍavas, Uddhava — each pointing onward, until the road ends in Vraja among the gopīs. The second, "The Glory of Goloka", follows Gopa-kumāra, a cowherd boy of Govardhana who received a mantra from a passing brāhmaṇa: he passes through Svarga, Maharloka, Tapoloka, Satyaloka, the effulgence of Brahman, Vaikuṇṭha, Ayodhyā and Dvārakā, and at every stage the same restlessness meets him, until he returns to the very land he started from. The book's answer is plain: above all worlds stands the village where God is taken for the neighbour's son; and the earthly Mathurā differs in nothing from Goloka. श्Caitanya-candrodaya-nāṭakaThe Rising of the Moon of Caitanya is a Sanskrit drama in ten acts on the life of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Its author, Kavi Karṇapūra (b. 1524), was the son of Śivānanda Sena, one of Mahāprabhu's associates, and saw Mahāprabhu himself as a child: this is a first generation's account, not a later legend. The play opens in Purī at a Guṇḍicā festival held without Mahāprabhu, and over ten acts carries the story from Navadvīpa to the taking of sannyāsa, the grace shown to Sārvabhauma and Pratāparudra, the wandering to the holy places and the great festival. Beside the human characters, personifications act in their own right: Kali and Adharma, Bhakti, Vairāgya, Discernment. This is not a purāṇic text — numbered verses alternate with prose speeches and stage directions — so the reading units here are a speech or a verse rather than a numbered verse, with the printed edition's verse number recorded separately. The text was proofread off the page images of the Kāvyamālā edition no. 87 (Bombay, 1917); the editor's footnotes are not part of the corpus.RUश्Caitanya-caritāmṛta-mahākāvyaA Sanskrit poem in twenty cantos on the life of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu — the earliest of its full-length biographies. Its author, Kavi Karṇapūra (b. 1524), was the son of Śivānanda Sena, one of Mahāprabhu's associates; he saw Mahāprabhu himself as a child and heard the rest from eyewitnesses. The poem opens with the lament of those left behind after the Lord's disappearance and then tells the story from his birth in Navadvīpa through his student years, his turning, his sannyāsa and travels, to the last years in Purī. The same author later retold these events as the drama Caitanya-candrodaya. The reading unit is the verse, numbered by canto and verse.RUश्PadyāvalīThe anthology compiled by Rūpa Gosvāmī: 388 verses on Kṛṣṇa drawn from some hundred and fifty poets — from Amaru and Bāṇa to Śrī Caitanya, Mādhavendra Purī and Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya. Fewer than forty are the compiler's own, and he says so in the first verse: the book is gathered, not composed. The order is not a heap: first the glory of Kṛṣṇa, the glory of the Name and kīrtana; then the devotees, their humility, steadiness and longing; then Mathurā and Vṛndā's forest, the infancy, the butter, the flute; then a long series of sections on the states of the heroine as the science of rasa distinguishes them — she who has adorned the bed, she who waited in vain, she who found him out, she in the pride of love, she who repents the quarrel; then the rāsa, the play in the water and in the boat; and at last the separation after the departure for Mathurā, the messages to Dvārakā and the meeting at Kurukṣetra. Every verse carries its poet's name, and that attribution is part of the book: the anthology remembers who spoke.RUश्Gīta-govindaJayadeva's lyric drama (12th century, Bengal): twelve sargas, 289 verses and twenty-four aṣṭapadī songs, each named with the rāga and tāla it is sung in. It opens with a household errand — Nanda asks Rādhā to take Kṛṣṇa home, since it is dark and the boy is timid — and the walk home turns out to be a whole book long. Kṛṣṇa plays among the cowherd women and Rādhā withdraws in jealousy; then he leaves them all, repents on the bank of the Yamunā, and the friend carries messages between the two. The tryst fails: the appointed hour passes empty, and the night ends in reproach and separation. That separation is set down as an illness, symptom by symptom, in the language of physicians: fever, trembling, sleeplessness, fainting, with sandal, moonlight and the Malaya wind — every remedy for heat — burning instead of cooling. Only in the eleventh sarga does Rādhā cross the threshold of the bower; the last two sargas are the union, where the Lord asks for her foot on his head as an ornament and then obediently ties her girdle. The poem is still sung in the temple of Jagannātha at Purī.RUश्Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta"The nectar for the ear that is Kṛṣṇa" — the poem of Bilvamaṅgala Ṭhākura, who called himself Līlāśuka, "the parrot of the pastimes". Three āśvāsas, 328 verses, and each verse is complete in itself: no narrative, no sequence of events. The poet speaks always of what he sees now — the boy with the flute, with milk at his lip, with the peacock feather, dancing on a palm, hiding behind a hem, stealing butter, glancing sidelong. The same few things — the lips, the smile, the glance, the sound of the flute, the dark colour — return in hundreds of turns, and that returning is the book: not an account of Kṛṣṇa but an inability to look away. Separation is rare here; the recurring word is "when?" The Gauḍīya tradition knows the book by a particular occasion: returning from the south, Śrī Caitanya brought two manuscripts back with him, and this was one. The text survives in two recensions, southern and Bengali; the southern, complete and gapless, is translated here.RU
