Vaishampayana said: "Then, great king, for these magnanimous Pandavas of measureless splendor, who had entered under disguise and lived in the finest of cities performing the tasks of King Virata, the term passed by fittingly. At the end of that thirteenth year, O Bharata, Susharman swiftly seized a great herd of cattle. Then the cowherds ran to the city with great speed. One of them, wearing earrings, leapt down from his chariot and saw the king of the Matsyas surrounded by valiant warriors adorned with earrings and armlets, together with his good counselors and the Pandavas, bulls among men. Approaching the great king Virata, increaser of the realm, who sat in the assembly hall, he bowed and said: 'Having defeated us in battle and humiliated us along with our kinsmen, the Trigartas are driving off hundreds of thousands of your cattle. Go after them, lord of men, so that your cattle may not be lost.'"

The term of exile is complete, yet what brings it to light is the duty to protect the cows. The Vedic order of life reveals itself simply: when the cows are in danger, a kshatriya must rise.
