While the enemy lay senseless, Partha remembered Uttara's words and said to the son of Matsya: "Go out into their midst while the Kurus are unconscious. Take the garments: white ones from the teacher and the son of Sharadvat, a fine yellow one from Karna, and blue ones from Drauni and the king. Bhishma, I think, still keeps his senses; he knows how to counter my weapons. Drive his horses round to the left; that is how one must proceed with those whose senses are not confounded." Then the great-souled son of Virata let go the reins, leapt down from the chariot, gathered up the garments of the great charioteers, and swiftly mounted his own chariot again. He then urged on his four fine white horses with their golden harness; they bore Arjuna out from the midst of the battle, through the army of banner-bearers. But as this foremost of men was leaving, the swift Bhishma struck him with arrows. Arjuna in turn slew Bhishma's horses and pierced his side with ten shafts. Then, setting Bhishma aside in the fight, he of the unfailing bow struck down his charioteer and stood forth, freed from the midst of the crowded chariots, like the thousand-rayed sun having rent Rahu asunder.

Uttara receives the trophies, but Arjuna keeps order even within this scene: Bhishma is passed carefully by, because the elder is still conscious and worthy of respect.
