This honey, which was the favorite drink of Kuvera, was guarded by venomous serpents. And it was such that a mortal who drank it gained immortality, the blind gained sight, and the old man became young again. Brahmins learned in sorcery spoke of this honey. And the hunters, seeing this honey, desired, O king, to obtain it. And they all perished in that inaccessible mountain cave, teeming with serpents. Just so, this son of yours desires to enjoy the whole earth without a rival. He sees the honey, but in his folly does not see the dreadful fall that awaits him. It is true that Duryodhana desires to fight with Savyasachin, but I see in him neither the energy nor the valor that could bring him safely through such a battle. On a single chariot Arjuna conquered the whole earth. At the head of their army, Bhishma, Drona and the others were terrified by Arjuna and utterly routed in the city of Virata. Remember what happened on that occasion. He still forgives, looking you in the face and waiting to see what you will do. Drupada, the king of the Matsyas, and Dhananjaya, when angered, are like a flame of fire driven by the wind — they will leave no remnant (of your army). O Dhritarashtra, take King Yudhishthira upon your lap, for under no circumstance will either side gain the victory if you go to war."

The passage 5.64.11-15 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already unfolding against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key themes: Krishna, dharma. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
