धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
भूयो मे पुण्डरीकाक्षं संजयाचक्ष्व पृच्छते ॥
नामकर्मार्थवित् तात प्राप्नुयां पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥
संजय उवाच
श्रुतं मे तस्य देवस्य नामनिर्वचनं शुभम् ॥
यावत् तत्राभिजाने ऽहम् अप्रमेयो हि केशवः ॥
वसनात् सर्वभूतानां वसुत्वाद् देवयोनितः ॥
वासुदेवस् ततो वेद्यो वृषत्वाद् वृष्णिर् उच्यते ॥
मौनाद् ध्यानाच् च योगाच् च विद्धि भारत माधवम् ॥
सर्वतत्त्वलयाच् चैव मधुहा मधुसूदनः ॥
कृषिर् भूवाचकः शब्दो णश् च निर्वृतिवाचकः ॥
कृष्णस् तद्भावयोगाच् च कृष्णो भवति शाश्वतः ॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
bhūyo me puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ saṃjayācakṣva pṛcchate ||
nāmakarmārthavit tāta prāpnuyāṃ puruṣottamam ||
saṃjaya uvāca
śrutaṃ me tasya devasya nāmanirvacanaṃ śubham ||
yāvat tatrābhijāne 'ham aprameyo hi keśavaḥ ||
vasanāt sarvabhūtānāṃ vasutvād devayonitaḥ ||
vāsudevas tato vedyo vṛṣatvād vṛṣṇir ucyate ||
maunād dhyānāc ca yogāc ca viddhi bhārata mādhavam ||
sarvatattvalayāc caiva madhuhā madhusūdanaḥ ||
kṛṣir bhūvācakaḥ śabdo ṇaś ca nirvṛtivācakaḥ ||
kṛṣṇas tadbhāvayogāc ca kṛṣṇo bhavati śāśvataḥ ||
Sanjaya said: 'These two enchanting archers, Arjuna and Vasudeva, who are wholly equal to one another in their godlike nature, were born by their own will. O lord, the discus that belongs to Vasudeva, possessed of immense energy, spans a space of five cubits across and can also be hurled at an enemy — in larger or smaller forms — at the will of its owner alone; ever conspicuous by its radiance, it is invisible to the Kurus. And for gauging the strength or weakness of the Pandavas, this discus offers the surest ground. Indeed, this scion of the Madhu line, endowed with immense might, with effort and in seeming playfulness overcame the formidable Naraka, Sambara, Kansa, and Shishupala, the lord of the Chedis.'
