Translation

Dhritarashtra said: "How is it, O Sanjaya, that you have come to know Madhava as the Supreme Lord of the universe? And how is it that I cannot know Him as such? Tell me this, O Sanjaya." Sanjaya said: "Listen, O king! You lack Knowledge, whereas my Knowledge has not diminished. One who lacks Knowledge and is wrapped in the darkness of ignorance does not know Keshava. Through my own knowledge, O lord, I know that the slayer of Madhu is the union of the Gross, the Subtle, and the Cause; that He is the Creator of all, yet Himself uncreated; and that, endowed with Divinity, it is He from whom all things arise, and He to whom all things return." Dhritarashtra said: "O son of Gavalgana, what is the nature of that faith you hold in Janardana, by which you know that the slayer of Madhu is the union of the Gross, the Subtle, and the Cause?" Sanjaya said: "Blessed are you, O king. I hold no regard for illusion, which is bound up with worldly pleasures, and I never practice barren observances — vows and works undertaken without reliance on Him and on purity of soul. Having attained purity of soul through faith, I have come to know Janardana from the scriptures." Dhritarashtra said: "O Duryodhana, seek the protection of Janardana, otherwise called Hrishikesha. O child, Sanjaya is one of our most faithful friends. Seek refuge in Keshava." Duryodhana said: "Even if the divine son of Devaki, joining in friendship with Arjuna, were to slay all mankind, I still could not bring myself to bow before Keshava." Dhritarashtra said: "This wicked son of yours, O Gandhari, has resolved to plunge himself into suffering. Envious, evil-souled, and vain, he spurns the words of all his elders." Gandhari said: "You greedy wretch, who scorns the commands of your elders, who abandons your father and me, who casts away prosperity and life, who swells the joy of your enemies and brings me deep sorrow — you, O fool, will remember your father's words when Bhimasena strikes you down, and you will bite the dust."
