Translation

Bhima: (Bhagavad-yana Parva) Janamejaya said: 'When good Sanjaya, having left the camp of the Pandavas, returned to the Kurus, what then did my forefathers, the sons of Pandu, do? O best of brahmanas, I wish to hear all of this. Therefore tell it to me.' Vaishampayana said: 'After Sanjaya had gone, Yudhishthira the Just addressed Krishna of the Dashcarha race, that chief of all the Sattvatas, saying: "O you who are devoted to your friends, the time has come for friends to show their friendship. I see no one besides you who could save us in this hour of calamity. Trusting in you, O Madhava, we fearlessly asked Duryodhana to return our share." who is full of boundless pride and, guided by his counselors, O scourge of foes, you protect the Vrishnis in all their calamities — protect now the Pandavas too from great danger, for they deserve your protection.' 'The divine Krishna said: "Here I am, O mighty-armed one. Tell me what you wish to say, for I, O Bharata, shall do all that you tell me." 'Yudhishthira said: "You have heard what the intention of Dhritarashtra and his son is. All that Sanjaya, O Krishna, told me surely has Dhritarashtra's assent. Sanjaya is Dhritarashtra's very soul, and he has spoken his thoughts. A messenger speaks according to his master's instructions, for if he speaks otherwise he deserves death. In his heart Dhritarashtra desires to make peace with us without returning our kingdom. Indeed, by Dhritarashtra's command we spent twelve years in the forest and one more year in hiding, firmly believing, O lord, that Dhritarashtra would faithfully keep his promise to us — which is now well known to the brahmanas who were with us — and would observe the virtues of a kshatriya. Out of attachment to his son, he heeds the counsel of the wicked. Following the advice of Suyodhana, the king, O Janardana, driven by greed and seeking his own advantage, behaves falsely toward us. What could be more grievous, O Janardana, than that I cannot support my mother and my friends? For my allies and for you, O slayer of Madhu, for my protector — I asked only for five villages: Avishthala, Vrikasthala, Makandi, Varanavata, and any other, O Govinda, as a fifth. 'Grant us,' we said, 'five villages or towns, O lord, where we five may live united, for we do not desire the destruction of the Bharatas.' Yet the malicious son of Dhritarashtra will not agree even to this. What could be more grievous than that?"'
