Vaishampayana said: ‘Rising at dawn, Krishna performed his morning rites and, having taken leave of the Bharatas, set out for the city (of the Kurus). And all the people of Vrikasthala, having bid farewell to that mighty, long-armed one as he prepared to depart, all returned to their homes. And all the sons of Dhritarashtra, except Duryodhana, clad in fine garments, together with Bhishma, Drona, Kripa and the others, came out to meet him.’

This passage develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace already unfolds against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key figures: Duryodhana, Karna. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of an envoy, faithfulness to one's promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
