सर्वं भवतु ते राज्यं पञ्च ग्रामान् विसर्जय ॥
अवश्यं भरणीया हि पितुस् ते राजसत्तम ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तु दुष्टात्मा नैव भावं व्यमुञ्चत ॥
दण्डं चतुर्थं पश्यामि तेषु पापेषु नान्यथा ॥
निर्याताश् च विनाशाय कुरुक्षेत्रं नराधिपाः ॥
एतत् ते कथितं सर्वं यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि ॥
न ते राज्यं प्रयच्छन्ति विना युद्धेन पाण्डव ॥
विनाशहेतवः सर्वे प्रत्युपस्थितमृत्यवः ॥
sarvaṃ bhavatu te rājyaṃ pañca grāmān visarjaya ||
avaśyaṃ bharaṇīyā hi pitus te rājasattama ||
evam uktas tu duṣṭātmā naiva bhāvaṃ vyamuñcata ||
daṇḍaṃ caturthaṃ paśyāmi teṣu pāpeṣu nānyathā ||
niryātāś ca vināśāya kurukṣetraṃ narādhipāḥ ||
etat te kathitaṃ sarvaṃ yadvṛttaṃ kurusaṃsadi ||
na te rājyaṃ prayacchanti vinā yuddhena pāṇḍava ||
vināśahetavaḥ sarve pratyupasthitamṛtyavaḥ ||
"Let the whole kingdom be yours; only set aside five villages for them. For your father's sons must surely be provided for, O best of kings." But though addressed thus, the evil-minded one did not let go of his intent. Toward those sinners I see only a fourth means, punishment, and no other. The kings have already set out for Kurukshetra, to their destruction. I have told you all that took place in the assembly of the Kurus. They will not give you the kingdom without war, O Pandava. All of them are causes of their own ruin, and death already stands before them.

Here Krishna sums up the peace mission: reconciliation, division, exhortation, intimidation, and the offer of a minimal concession were all tried, yet Duryodhana did not abandon his intent. When the heart is closed to dharma, even the gentlest and the strongest means become fruitless, and only the inevitable clash remains.
