रामेण सह मा योत्सीर् गुरुणेति पुनः पुनः ॥
न हि रामो रणे जेतुं त्वया न्याय्यः कुरूद्वह ॥
मानं कुरुष्व गाङ्गेय ब्राह्मणस्य रणाजिरे ॥
वयं तु गुरवस् तुभ्यं ततस् त्वां वारयामहे ॥
भीष्मो वसूनाम् अन्यतमो दिष्ट्या जीवसि पुत्रक ॥
गाङ्गेयः शंतनोः पुत्रो वसुर् एष महायशाः ॥
कथं त्वया रणे जेतुं राम शक्यो निवर्त वै ॥
अर्जुनः पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः पुरंदरसुतो बली ॥
नरः प्रजापतिर् वीरः पूर्वदेवः सनातनः ॥
सव्यसाचीति विख्यातस् त्रिषु लोकेषु वीर्यवान् ॥
भीष्ममृत्युर् यथाकालं विहितो वै स्वयंभुवा ॥

savyasācīti vikhyātas triṣu lokeṣu vīryavān ||
bhīṣmamṛtyur yathākālaṃ vihito vai svayaṃbhuvā ||
'Again and again they said to him: "Do not fight with Rama, your teacher." For it would not be right for you to defeat Rama in battle, O upholder of the Kuru line. Show honor to the brahmana on the field of battle, O son of Ganga. We are your elders, and therefore we restrain you. Bhishma is one of the Vasus; by good fortune you remain alive, my son. This son of Ganga, son of Shantanu, is a Vasu of great renown. How could you defeat him in battle, O Rama? Withdraw. Arjuna, best of the Pandavas, the mighty son of Indra, Nara, Prajapati, a hero, the primeval and eternal god, known in the three worlds as Savyasachin, is endowed with valor; Svayambhu has appointed him, in due time, as the death of Bhishma.'

Here the duel finally comes to a stop — not through defeat, but through the intervention of a higher order. Narada, the gods, the ancestors, the sages, and Ganga restrain them both: Bhishma from using Prasvapa against his teacher, and Rama from continuing to fight a kshatriya whom he neither should nor can kill. The chapter shows a rare form of victory: both sides keep their vow, yet accept the limit set by dharma. It is especially significant that Bhishma bows to Rama once the battle stops. He does not turn strength into pride; reverence for the guru remains higher than a warrior's self-regard.
