द्वौ भूतसर्गौ लोके ऽस्मिन् दैव आसुर एव च ॥
दैवो विस्तरशः प्रोक्त आसुरं पार्थ मे शृणु ॥
प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुर् आसुराः ॥
न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते ॥
असत्यम् अप्रतिष्ठं ते जगद् आहुर् अनीश्वरम् ॥
अपरस्परसंभूतं किम् अन्यत् कामहैतुकम् ॥
एतां दृष्टिम् अवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानो ऽल्पबुद्धयः ॥
प्रभवन्त्य् उग्रकर्माणः क्षयाय जगतो ऽहिताः ॥
कामम् आश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दम्भमानमदान्विताः ॥
मोहाद् गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान् प्रवर्तन्ते ऽशुचिव्रताः ॥
चिन्ताम् अपरिमेयां च प्रलयान्ताम् उपाश्रिताः ॥
कामोपभोगपरमा एतावद् इति निश्चिताः ॥
आशापाशशतैर् बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः ॥
ईहन्ते कामभोगार्थम् अन्यायेनार्थसंचयान् ॥

dvau bhūtasargau loke 'smin daiva āsura eva ca ||
daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṃ pārtha me śṛṇu ||
pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidur āsurāḥ ||
na śaucaṃ nāpi cācāro na satyaṃ teṣu vidyate ||
asatyam apratiṣṭhaṃ te jagad āhur anīśvaram ||
aparasparasaṃbhūtaṃ kim anyat kāmahaitukam ||
etāṃ dṛṣṭim avaṣṭabhya naṣṭātmāno 'lpabuddhayaḥ ||
prabhavanty ugrakarmāṇaḥ kṣayāya jagato 'hitāḥ ||
kāmam āśritya duṣpūraṃ dambhamānamadānvitāḥ ||
mohād gṛhītvāsadgrāhān pravartante 'śucivratāḥ ||
cintām aparimeyāṃ ca pralayāntām upāśritāḥ ||
kāmopabhogaparamā etāvad iti niścitāḥ ||
āśāpāśaśatair baddhāḥ kāmakrodhaparāyaṇāḥ ||
īhante kāmabhogārtham anyāyenārthasaṃcayān ||

Translation

"There are two kinds of created beings in this world: the divine and the demoniac. Of the divine I have already spoken at length; now, O son of Pritha, hear from Me about the demoniac. Demoniac people do not know what is to be done and what is to be avoided; in them there is neither purity, nor proper conduct, nor truthfulness. They say that the world is unreal, without foundation, without a Lord, not arisen from any higher cause, and held together only by desire. Holding to such a view, these lost souls of meager understanding become doers of fierce deeds, enemies of the world, acting for its destruction. Given over to insatiable desire, full of hypocrisy, self-conceit, and arrogance, having seized upon false views out of delusion, they act according to impure vows. They cling to boundless anxiety until death, hold sensual enjoyment to be the highest goal, and are convinced: 'this alone is everything.' Bound by hundreds of nooses of hope, given over to desire and anger, they strive to amass wealth by unrighteous means for the sake of sensual pleasures."
