Translation

We saw severed tomaras and bows, the heads of mahouts, colorful trappings, gold-gleaming girths, neck-ornaments, shaktis, banners, kanapas, quivers, mechanisms, multicolored bows, bright braziers, goads together with ankushas, various bells, and gold-inlaid hilts — all of it flying and falling together with their riders, O king. The earth was carpeted with slain elephants, their bodies and trunks severed, as though with fallen mountains. Having thus crushed the great elephants, this best of men trampled the horses and felled the finest riders, O Bharata; the battle between him and them was terrible. Bridles, harness straps, gold-gleaming whips, trappings, spears, costly rishtis, armor, shields, and colorful coverings lay scattered everywhere in the great battle. With varied hurling devices and gleaming weapons he covered the earth as if with many-colored flowers. Mighty Pandava leapt onto individual chariot warriors, seized them, and with his sword hurled them down together with their banners. The people marveled in battle to see glorious Bhima leaping again and again to the sides, running, and moving in strange and varied courses. Some he killed with his foot, others he seized and hurled down, still others he cleaved with his sword, others he terrified with his roar, and yet others he felled to the ground with the force of his thighs; some, merely at the sight of him, died of fear.
