अविध्यत् त्रिंशता बाणैर् दशभिश् चास्य सारथिम् ॥
सो ऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासः सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन् ॥
भल्लेन भृशतीक्ष्णेन निचकर्तास्य कार्मुकम् ॥
अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षिप्रम् एव समर्पयत् ॥
अश्वांश् चास्यावधीद् राजन्न् उभौ तौ पार्ष्णिसारथी ॥
स हताश्वे रथे तिष्ठन् ददर्श भरतर्षभ ॥
पुत्रः सांयमनेः पुत्रं पाञ्चाल्यस्य महात्मनः ॥
स संगृह्य महाघोरं निस्त्रिंशवरम् आयसम् ॥
पदातिस् तूर्णम् अभ्यर्छद् रथस्थं द्रुपदात्मजम् ॥
तं महौघम् इवायान्तं खात् पतन्तम् इवोरगम् ॥
भ्रान्तावरणनिस्त्रिंशं कालोत्सृष्टम् इवान्तकम् ॥
दीप्यन्तम् इव शस्त्रार्च्या मत्तवारणविक्रमम् ॥
अपश्यन् पाण्डवास् तत्र धृष्टद्युम्नश् च पार्षतः ॥
तस्य पाञ्चालपुत्रस् तु प्रतीपम् अभिधावतः ॥
शितनिस्त्रिंशहस्तस्य शरावरणधारिणः ॥
बाणवेगम् अतीतस्य रथाभ्याशम् उपेयुषः ॥
त्वरन् सेनापतिः क्रुद्धो बिभेद गदया शिरः ॥
तस्य राजन् सनिस्त्रिंशं सुप्रभं च शरावरम् ॥
हतस्य पततो हस्ताद् वेगेन न्यपतद् भुवि ॥
तं निहत्य गदाग्रेण लेभे स परमं यशः ॥
पुत्रः पाञ्चालराजस्य महात्मा भीमविक्रमः ॥
तस्मिन् हते महेष्वासे राजपुत्रे महारथे ॥
हाहाकारो महान् आसीत् तव सैन्यस्य मारिष ॥

sa saṃgṛhya mahāghoraṃ nistriṃśavaram āyasam ||
padātis tūrṇam abhyarchad rathasthaṃ drupadātmajam ||
taṃ mahaugham ivāyāntaṃ khāt patantam ivoragam ||
bhrāntāvaraṇanistriṃśaṃ kālotsṛṣṭam ivāntakam ||
dīpyantam iva śastrārcyā mattavāraṇavikramam ||
apaśyan pāṇḍavās tatra dhṛṣṭadyumnaś ca pārṣataḥ ||
tasya pāñcālaputras tu pratīpam abhidhāvataḥ ||
śitanistriṃśahastasya śarāvaraṇadhāriṇaḥ ||
bāṇavegam atītasya rathābhyāśam upeyuṣaḥ ||
tvaran senāpatiḥ kruddho bibheda gadayā śiraḥ ||
tasya rājan sanistriṃśaṃ suprabhaṃ ca śarāvaram ||
hatasya patato hastād vegena nyapatad bhuvi ||
taṃ nihatya gadāgreṇa lebhe sa paramaṃ yaśaḥ ||
putraḥ pāñcālarājasya mahātmā bhīmavikramaḥ ||
tasmin hate maheṣvāse rājaputre mahārathe ||
hāhākāro mahān āsīt tava sainyasya māriṣa ||
Then the son of Samyamani pierced the Panchala prince, intoxicated with battle, with thirty arrows, and his charioteer with ten. Deeply pierced, the great archer, licking the corners of his mouth, cut down his bow with an exceedingly sharp bhalla; then he swiftly struck him with twenty-five more arrows, and slew his horses and both his rear charioteers, O king. The son of Samyamani, standing in his chariot with its horses slain, saw the son of the great-souled Panchala king, O bull of the Bharatas. Then, seizing a most terrible, excellent iron sword, he rushed on foot toward the son of Drupada, standing in his chariot. The Pandavas, and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata, saw him there, coming on like a great flood, like a serpent falling from the sky, whirling shield and sword, like Death sent forth by Time, blazing as if with the fire of weapons, and advancing with the gait of a maddened elephant. As he, holding his sharp sword and bearing his shield, outran the speed of arrows and drew near to the chariot, the enraged general, hastening, split his head with his mace. O king, from the hands of the slain man as he fell, the sword and the bright shield dropped swiftly and crashed to the ground. Having slain him with the tip of his mace, the great-souled son of the Panchala king, terrible in valor, won the highest glory. When that great archer, the prince and mighty charioteer, was slain, a great wail arose among your army, O honorable one.

This scene sharply shows the difference between fury and mature warrior discipline. Samyamani's son charges on foot with a sword, like Death itself, but Dhrishtadyumna answers in time and with precision; in battle, rage alone is not enough.
