तद् बलं प्रद्रुतं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रो दुर्योधनस् तव ॥
पुरस्कृत्य रणे भीष्मं सर्वसैन्यपुरस्कृतम् ॥
सर्वोद्योगेन महता धनंजयम् उपाद्रवत् ॥
त्रिगर्ताधिपतेर् अर्थे जीवितस्य विशां पते ॥
स एकः समरे तस्थौ किरन् बहुविधाञ् शरान् ॥
भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैः शेषा विप्रद्रुता नराः ॥
तथैव पण्डवा राजन् सर्वोद्योगेन दंशिताः ॥
प्रययुः फल्गुनार्थाय यत्र भीष्मो व्यवस्थितः ॥
जानन्तो ऽपि रणे शौर्यं घोरं गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥
हाहाकारकृतोत्साहा भीष्मं जग्मुः समन्ततः ॥
ततस् तालध्वजः शूरः पाण्डवानाम् अनीकिनीम् ॥
छादयाम् आस समरे शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
एकीभूतास् ततः सर्वे कुरवः पाण्डवैः सह ॥
अयुध्यन्त महाराज मध्यं प्राप्ते दिवाकरे ॥

hāhākārakṛtotsāhā bhīṣmaṃ jagmuḥ samantataḥ ||
tatas tāladhvajaḥ śūraḥ pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm ||
chādayām āsa samare śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
ekībhūtās tataḥ sarve kuravaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ||
ayudhyanta mahārāja madhyaṃ prāpte divākare ||
Seeing that army scattered in flight, your son Duryodhana, placing Bhishma — who led the entire army — at the front of the battle, rushed upon Dhananjaya with tremendous exertion, for the sake of the life of the lord of the Trigartas, O lord of the peoples. He alone, together with all his brothers, held his ground in the battle, scattering arrows of many kinds; the rest of the men fled. In just the same way the Pandavas, armed and straining with all their effort, O king, marched for the sake of Phalguna to where Bhishma stood. Though they knew the terrible valor of the wielder of Gandiva, they advanced upon Bhishma from every side, their ardor roused by battle-cries. Then the hero with the palm-tree banner covered the army of the Pandavas in the battle with arrows of bent joints. After that all the Kurus and the Pandavas together fought, O great king, when the sun had reached the zenith.
