And bold Yudhamanyu, and invincible Shikhandin, and unyielding Uttamaujas, and mighty charioteer Virata, and the sons of Draupadi blazing with fury, and the mighty son of Shishupala, and the Kekayas of great valor, and the Srinjayas by the thousand — these and the rest with their own retinues, skilled in arms, frenzied in battle, rushed at once upon Drona, eager for battle.

The list keeps going — thousands of frenzied, skilled, valiant men rushing upon a single Drona. Thus the tradition shows a disproportion: against one teacher rises a countless multitude of the bravest. And yet, as what follows will show, they will not be able to overcome him. It is telling that numbers and fury do not decide the outcome. The verse teaches that even the greatest multitude of valiant men can prove powerless before one true master; that the onslaught of thousands breaks upon the gathered strength of one, as waves upon a rock; and that the tradition, piling up this long list of attackers, prepares to show all the more brightly the terrible might of Drona, before whom this whole host will retreat — and with it the helplessness that will later push them to lay an unbearable burden on a boy.
