उदक्रोशन् महाशब्दं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥

Having spied the lord of the Madras struck down by Subhadra's son with swift arrows in the fight, Shalya's younger brother, in fury, hurling arrows, attacked. Having wounded Arjuna's son together with his horses and charioteer with ten arrows, he shouted at the top of his lungs, 'Stand, stand!'

Shalya's brother rushes to avenge the fallen -- kinship's love turns to fury and calls him to battle. Here the engine of this war reveals itself: behind every fallen warrior stands an avenger, and blood demands blood without end. It is telling that the challenge 'Stand, stand!' sounds like the impulse of a wounded heart, not weighing its own strength. The verse teaches that vengeance for kin, however natural, only multiplies death, drawing ever more into the circle of dying; that love turned into the fury of revenge is reckless and often leads the avenger to follow the very one he mourns; and that in this endless chain of 'the slain, the avenger, the slain,' the suicidal nature of enmity is laid bare, where every death gives birth to another.
