स भीमसेनं दशभिर् माद्रीपुत्रौ त्रिभिस् त्रिभिः ॥
विराटद्रुपदौ षड्भिः शतेन च शिखण्डिनम् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नं च विंशत्या धर्मपुत्रं च सप्तभिः ॥
केकयान् दशभिर् विद्ध्वा द्रौपदेयांस् त्रिभिस् त्रिभिः ॥
शतशश् चापरान् योधान् सद्विपांश् च रथान् रणे ॥
शरैर् अवचकर्तोग्रैः क्रुद्धो ऽन्तक इव प्रजाः ॥

śarair avacakartograiḥ kruddho 'ntaka iva prajāḥ ||
"He struck Bhimasena with ten [arrows], the sons of Madri with three each, Virata and Drupada with six, and Shikhandin with a hundred, and Dhrishtadyumna with twenty, and the son of Dharma with seven; having pierced the Kekayas with ten, the sons of Draupadi with three each. And by the hundreds he cut down other warriors, and chariots along with elephants in the battle, with fierce arrows, like enraged Yama cutting down all creatures."

Alone, Duryodhana repays each of the leaders in kind and mows down hundreds, "kruddhaḥ antakaḥ iva prajāḥ", like enraged Yama among creatures. It is telling that the pampered one showed forth a terror worthy of the god of death. The verse teaches that one should not judge a person by the appearance of his life: one raised in ease may in battle show a ferocity none expected -- for strength of spirit is not always visible in comfort and is disclosed only under the blow of trial.
