तस्मै प्रासृजद् उग्राणि विविधानि परंतपः ॥
अमर्षी पाण्डवः क्रुद्धः शरवर्षाणि मारिष ॥
तस्य तानीषुवर्षाणि मत्तद्विरदगामिनः ॥
सूतपुत्रो ऽस्त्रमायाभिर् अग्रसत् सुमहायशाः ॥
स यथावन् महाराज विद्यया वै सुपूजितः ॥
आचार्यवन् महेष्वासः कर्णः पर्यचरद् रणे ॥
tasmai prāsṛjad ugrāṇi vividhāni paraṃtapaḥ ||
amarṣī pāṇḍavaḥ kruddhaḥ śaravarṣāṇi māriṣa ||
tasya tānīṣuvarṣāṇi mattadviradagāminaḥ ||
sūtaputro 'stramāyābhir agrasat sumahāyaśāḥ ||
sa yathāvan mahārāja vidyayā vai supūjitaḥ ||
ācāryavan maheṣvāsaḥ karṇaḥ paryacarad raṇe ||
At him the scorcher of foes, the enraged, unyielding Pandava, let loose fierce and varied showers of arrows, O worthy one. Those showers of arrows, from him who moved with the gait of a rutting elephant, the greatly renowned suta's son swallowed up with the illusions of his weapons. As is proper, O great king, well honored in his art, like a teacher, the great archer Karna moved about in the battle.

Karna "astramāyābhiḥ agrasat" swallows the showers of arrows with the illusion of his weapon-craft, acting "ācāryavat," like a teacher: his mastery is worthy of a guru. It is telling that the epic honors Karna's training on par with the greatest. The verse teaches that true skill reveals itself in self-mastery: where another squanders effort, the master absorbs the blows with a teacher's ease, for skill brought to perfection turns defense into the likeness of a calm lesson.
