स निर्भिद्य रणे पार्थं सूतपुत्रधनुश्च्युतः ॥
अगच्छद् दारयन् भूमिं चित्रपुङ्खः शिलीमुखः ॥
so 'tividdho mahārāja pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā ||
sṛkviṇī lelihan vīraḥ krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ ||
tataḥ śaraṃ mahārāja sarvakāyāvadāraṇam ||
prāhiṇod bhīmasenāya balāyendra ivāśanim ||
sa nirbhidya raṇe pārthaṃ sūtaputradhanuścyutaḥ ||
agacchad dārayan bhūmiṃ citrapuṅkhaḥ śilīmukhaḥ ||
He, sorely pierced by the renowned Pandava, O great king, licking the corners of his mouth, the hero, his eyes reddened with wrath, then hurled at Bhimasena an arrow capable of rending the whole body, as Indra hurled his thunderbolt at Bala. That many-plumed arrow, loosed from the bow of the charioteer's son, having pierced Partha in the battle, went off, tearing the earth.

Karna's wrath betrays itself in a small gesture — he licks the corners of his mouth, his eyes crimson: rage breaks out in the body before it breaks out in the weapon. It is telling that the fearsome arrow, having pierced Bhima, does not fell him but goes on to bury itself in the earth: even the mightiest blow, meeting firm flesh, merely passes beyond its mark. The verse teaches that a fury that inflames does not bring victory closer; whoever strikes from rage spends both strength and composure, while the opponent still stands.
