आगच्छतस् तान् सहसा कुमारान् देवरूपिणः ॥
प्रतिजग्राह समरे भीमसेनो हसन्न् इव ॥
तव दृष्ट्वा तु तनयान् भीमसेनसमीपगान् ॥
अभ्यवर्तत राधेयो भीमसेनं महाबलम् ॥
विसृजन् विशिखान् राजन् स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ् शिलाशितान् ॥
तं तु भीमो ऽभ्ययात् तूर्णं वार्यमाणः सुतैस् तव ॥

diśaḥ śaraiḥ samāvṛṇvañ śalabhānām iva vrajaiḥ ||
āgacchatas tān sahasā kumārān devarūpiṇaḥ ||

tava dṛṣṭvā tu tanayān bhīmasenasamīpagān ||

visṛjan viśikhān rājan svarṇapuṅkhāñ śilāśitān ||
taṃ tu bhīmo 'bhyayāt tūrṇaṃ vāryamāṇaḥ sutais tava ||
"They, having surrounded the mighty-armed Vrikodara from all sides, covered every direction with arrows, like swarms of locusts. Those suddenly advancing princes, godlike in form, Bhimasena met in battle as though laughing. But, having seen your sons drawing near to Bhimasena, the son of Radha rushed forth at mighty Bhimasena, loosing gold-feathered arrows whetted on stone, o king; at him Bhima then rushed swiftly, though restrained by your sons."

Five in godlike beauty surround Bhima, and he meets them "as though laughing": the calm of the mighty where others would falter. It is notable that the youth and beauty of the princes are recalled on the very eve of their death, deepening the bitterness of the loss. The verse teaches that disproportionate daring against the unconquerable is not valor but slaughter; and the brightness of youth will not turn aside the fate of those cast into a hopeless fight.
