वैशंपायन उवाच
विश्वामित्रं च कण्वं च नारदं च तपोधनम् ॥
सारणप्रमुखा वीरा ददृशुर् द्वारकागतान् ॥
ते वै साम्बं पुरस्कृत्य भूषयित्वा स्त्रियं यथा ॥
अब्रुवन्न् उपसंगम्य दैवदण्डनिपीडिताः ॥
इयं स्त्री पुत्रकामस्य बभ्रोर् अमिततेजसः ॥
ऋषयः साधु जानीत किम् इयं जनयिष्यति ॥
इत्य् उक्तास् ते तदा राजन् विप्रलम्भप्रधर्षिताः ॥
प्रत्यब्रुवंस् तान् मुनयो यत् तच् छृणु नराधिप ॥

iyaṃ strī putrakāmasya babhror amitatejasaḥ ||
ṛṣayaḥ sādhu jānīta kim iyaṃ janayiṣyati ||
ity uktās te tadā rājan vipralambhapradharṣitāḥ ||
pratyabruvaṃs tān munayo yat tac chṛṇu narādhipa ||
Vaishampayana said: The heroes headed by Sarana saw Vishvamitra, Kanva, and Narada, rich in austerity, arrived in Dvaraka. Impelled by the rod of fate, they placed Samba in front, dressed him as a woman, approached, and said: 'This woman is the wife of Babhru, of immeasurable splendor, who desires a son; O sages, be pleased to tell us what this one will bring forth.' Thus addressed, O king, the sages — offended by the deception — replied to them; hear what they said, O lord of men.

The young Vrishnis, intoxicated with pride and 'impelled by the rod of fate,' mock the great sages by dressing Samba as a woman for the sake of a deceitful jest. In this sacrilege lies the root of the coming destruction: mockery of the holy does not pass without consequence, for insulting the righteous brings calamity more surely than any external foe. Significantly, their very audacity is called the work of 'the rod of fate': a clan destined to perish grows blind and itself hastens its own end. The verse teaches that mockery and deception of the holy is the gravest of sins, inevitably bringing ruin; and that when a clan has reached its appointed end, the darkening of reason itself drives it to insolence against the righteous, drawing upon it the destruction that has been ordained.
