ततः पुत्रांश् च पौत्रांश् च भ्रातॄन् अथ सखीन् अपि ॥
शयानान् निहतान् दृष्ट्वा ततो माम् अब्रवीद् इदम् ॥
संप्राप्तो ऽद्यायम् अस्यान्तः कुलस्य पुरुषर्षभ ॥
आगमिष्यति बीभत्सुर् इमां द्वारवतीं पुरीम् ॥
आख्येयं तस्य यद् वृत्तं वृष्णीनां वैशसं महत् ॥
स तु श्रुत्वा महातेजा यदूनाम् अनयं प्रभो ॥
आगन्ता क्षिप्रम् एवेह न मे ऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥
यो ऽहं तम् अर्जुनं विद्धि यो ऽर्जुनः सो ऽहम् एव तु ॥
यद् ब्रूयात् तत् तथा कार्यम् इति बुध्यस्व माधव ॥
tataḥ putrāṃś ca pautrāṃś ca bhrātṝn atha sakhīn api ||
śayānān nihatān dṛṣṭvā tato mām abravīd idam ||
saṃprāpto 'dyāyam asyāntaḥ kulasya puruṣarṣabha ||
āgamiṣyati bībhatsur imāṃ dvāravatīṃ purīm ||
ākhyeyaṃ tasya yad vṛttaṃ vṛṣṇīnāṃ vaiśasaṃ mahat ||
sa tu śrutvā mahātejā yadūnām anayaṃ prabho ||
āgantā kṣipram eveha na me 'trāsti vicāraṇā ||
yo 'haṃ tam arjunaṃ viddhi yo 'rjunaḥ so 'ham eva tu ||
yad brūyāt tat tathā kāryam iti budhyasva mādhava ||
'Then, beholding his sons and grandsons, brothers and friends lying slain, Krishna spoke to me: "Who am I — and what shall I do?"'

At the heart of this chapter stand Krishna's mysterious words: 'Who am I — what shall I do?' The question is not bewilderment but an expression of the complete setting aside of personal will: Krishna, witnessing the destruction of His own clan, neither grieves nor acts in defiance of destiny, but inquires into His own place within an already accomplished dispensation.
