Know: the Ātman is the lord of the chariot, the body is the chariot itself; know the intellect as the charioteer, and the mind as the reins.

Here begins the most famous allegory of the Kaṭha — the chariot. The disposition is made with an antique clarity: ātmānaṁ rathinaṁ viddhi — "the Ātman is the rathin, the lord of the chariot", the rider and the owner; śarīraṁ ratham — "the body is the chariot", the vehicle, not the passenger; buddhiṁ sārathim — "the intellect is the charioteer", the one who holds the direction; manaḥ pragraham — "the mind is the reins", the transmission between the decision and the powers.
Every identification is a remedy for its own disease. The soul is the master: not the body's prisoner nor its product; she rides, she does not carry. The body is the vehicle: it is cared for, not deified; he who lives for the body is a groom who has forgotten his lord. The intellect is the charioteer: its business is to know the road and the goal, not to serve the whims of the team. The mind is the reins: a splendid instrument of connection and a hopeless commander.
The whole anthropology of the Upaniṣads is in one harness; and the root of every wreck in life is at once visible: the places confused. When the reins trail on the ground and the horses choose the road, there is a chariot but no journey. The verses that follow will play out both scenarios — the governed and the ungoverned team — down to the terminal stations of both routes.
