The third step: mano brahmeti — "mind is Brahman". And this is deeper than the prāṇa: the life of beings is born of a design (the parents' desire precedes conception; the will to live precedes breathing), lives by mind (a body that has lost the will to live goes out with its lungs intact) and returns into mind (in death the senses fold up into the manas — Praśna 3.9). Bhṛgu has discovered idealism: consciousness is prior to the vital force.
Each of his steps repeats the great philosophies of the world in their historical order: matter — life — mind: the Upaniṣad has passed through them all in three paragraphs and mocked none: each is true in its layer and becomes an error only by congealing. The error of the philosophies is not in their answers but in their stops.
tapasā brahma vijijñāsasva — for the fourth time the same command. Bhṛgu's fire is burning deep now: behind mind there glimmers that which judges the mind itself — discerning knowledge. But that too will prove a sheath: the father is inexorable, for he knows to what depth his son's burning must reach.
