स होवाच हिरण्यगर्भःsa hovāca hiraṇyagarbhaḥhe, Hiraṇyagarbha, replied; so said Hiraṇyagarbha [the one born of the golden egg]; Brahmā, Hiraṇyagarbha, answered
हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरेhare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hareHare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare (the first half of the mahā-mantra); O energy of the Lord! O source of the highest delight! (Hare — an address to the Lord's energy; Rāma — a name of the Lord)

ततः प्रकाशते परं ब्रह्मtataḥ prakāśate paraṃ brahmathen the supreme Brahman shines forth; then the Supreme Truth reveals itself; then the transcendent Brahman blazes out
मेघापाये रविरश्मिमण्डलीवेतिmeghāpāye raviraśmimaṇḍalīvetilike the orb of the sun's rays [emerging] when the clouds have passed; as the circle of sunbeams when the clouds disperse; like the sun's halo coming out from behind the clouds — so it is said
Translation

Nārada asked again: "And what is that name?" And Hiraṇyagarbha [Brahmā] answered: Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare. Such are the sixteen names that destroy the taint of Kali. In all the Vedas no means more effective than this is to be found. The soul is wrapped in sixteen coverings; by this [mantra] the covering is destroyed, and then the supreme Brahman shines forth, as the disc of the sun comes through the parting clouds.
