The book ends with two syllables, and this is the moment to look back over it as a whole.
Sixteen verses, of which two are ciphers, one a list of names, one a count of triangles, one about the five forbidden offerings. A composition ancient, obscure, in places beautiful, and in places such that it had to be said plainly that this we do not accept (12).
What remains once the diagrams have been taken apart? Little remains, and it is worth having.
A count that moves from one to many and calls plurality the deed of the one itself (3). Two at the center of the city, named separately, by masculine and feminine name (5). A portrait composed of everyday words — proud, modest, sweet, chattering (6). A limit described by the verbs “dwell” and “enter,” not “dissolve” (7). A share in immortality, received through praise (9). And, finally, the fourteenth verse, where the two are named ubhau dātārau, “both givers,” and declared equal three times over.
It is for the sake of this fourteenth verse that the book is worth remembering. In the most ancient layer of the tradition, long before all the disputes of the schools, the Highest is described as a pair; and this layer knows nothing of any “one without a second.”
The syllable hrīṃ, with which everything ends, means nothing and stands in place of a name. It is worth noting only that it is repeated twice: even where the name is not spoken aloud, it is uttered twice — as one calls out to someone.
