Here is a verse worth examining word by word, for the word will recur in the next: vibhinnaḥ, "distinct." It is said of each successive sheath that it is vibhinnā ca antaraḥ sthitaḥ, "distinct and standing within." Not "the same as the previous," not "the same one in another form," but distinct — and, moreover, within.
These two words, placed together, are exactly what the Vaiṣṇava side asserts about the relation of the soul to Him, and has asserted for centuries. Distinct and not separate: what is within is distinct from that in which it is — otherwise the word "within" would have no sense — and not separate from it, otherwise it would not be within. It is worth noting that this verse stands in a book that, twenty lines from now, will declare "there is no difference at all" (26). Collections of this kind are useful precisely because they do not smooth themselves over: both statements lie side by side in them, and the reader can compare.
Let us add that the whole mapping of sheaths speaks against sheer unity by its very structure. There are five sheaths, nested one within another, and each is distinct from its neighbor; if there were no distinctions, there would be no sheaths, but only one. And finally: svataḥ, "of itself." The inner one stands not because it was placed there, but of itself; that is, it has its own being, not a borrowed one.
