Here is an equation worth examining carefully, for it is excellently constructed and because a conclusion will now be drawn from it that we will disagree with. A rite is taken and mapped onto cognition: the priest is the knower, the fire is knowledge itself, the offering is what is known. The comparison is precise: as the priest places the offering in the fire and it disappears within it, so the knower places the object in knowledge, and the object in knowledge, as it were, dissolves — becomes known, ceases to be foreign.
All of this is true and well observed. Knowledge indeed resembles a sacrifice: the object is given over, and it ceases to be what it was for you yesterday. It is worth noting, however, that in this breakdown the priest, the fire, and the offering are named as three, not one. A rite is a rite precisely because there are three in it; if they were one, there would be nothing to place, no one to place it, and nowhere to place it.
The conclusion the next line draws is precisely that these three are one; and there we will examine why this conclusion does not follow from such a premise.
