Note that three things of different kinds are placed in one list: ucchiṣṭa ("leftovers"), duścarita ("wrong deeds"), and asatāṃ pratigraha ("what was received from the unworthy"). The first and third are ritual impurities; the second is a moral fault. We have noted this mixing more than once — in the Bhasma-jābāla and the Rudrākṣa-jābāla — and each time said it is the chief affliction of developed ritualism.
It must be said, however, what can be said in its defense, for here there is a defense. The third item of the list — asatāṃ pratigraham, "received from the unworthy" — is in fact not ritual but moral: it concerns not living off people who have gained wealth dishonestly. This matter is almost unknown to us, but in the old way of life it was living: discernment about from whom to receive was considered not squeamishness, but conscience.
Let us add what deserves noting in the very structure of the prayer. Purification is asked for before eating, not after; that is, a person sits down at the table knowing his own wrongdoing, and does not pretend it is absent. The Vaiṣṇava side holds to such a structure, and in its practice, before taking food, one reads not only thanksgiving but also a request for forgiveness; and it was discussed, when reading the Rudrākṣa-jābāla (3p15), that the admission of fault is the first condition of every purification.
