Worth noting is the phrase anubhava-paryanta, "reaching to experience." Anubhava means "experience, direct lived reality"; and it is said the intellect must reach it, not stop at understanding. This distinction is constant in Indian literature, and is stated through three words: shravana (hearing), manana (pondering), nididhyasana (assimilation); and only the third carries one to experience.
Let us add what is said of such a person's effect: tad-drishti-gocharah sarve, "all who fall within the range of his sight" are freed. That is, what acted was the gaze, not instruction. This position is fundamental in Vaishnava practice and is stated through darshana, "seeing": one comes not to listen, but to see; and of the fact that darshana is two-sided — seeing and being seen — discussed when reading the Nrisimha-tapani.
Let us add what it draws from this, and which forms its usual rule. If the gaze acts, then what matters most is transmitted not by words; and hence its practice requires not so much hearing as presence: to live nearby, to eat the remains, to follow along. Here lies the ground of sadhu-sanga, "the company of the honest," discussed when reading the Krishna Upanishad (2.15).
