"[The Valakhilyas proclaimed:] 'Let another Indra of all the gods arise, acting by his own will, striking fear into the present king of the gods; a hundredfold surpassing Indra in valor and might, swift as thought; by the fruit of our austerity let him be born now, terrible.' Learning of this, the king of the gods, Shatakratu (Indra), deeply troubled, took refuge there with Kashyapa, firm in his vows. Having heard this from the king of the gods, Kashyapa Prajapati, approaching the Valakhilyas, asked them about the deed they were performing. And the truth-speaking sages answered him: 'So be it.' Then Prajapati Kashyapa spoke to them with conciliation: 'This Indra has been made lord of the three worlds by the appointment of Brahma; and you too, O ascetics, are striving for the sake of a new Indra. But it is not fitting for you, O most virtuous ones, to make Brahma's word false; and let your resolve, too, not be false, nor my intention. Let him become Indra of the winged creatures, endowed with surpassing strength and might; and show mercy to the king of the gods, who begs.' Thus addressed by Kashyapa, the ascetic Valakhilyas, honoring that best of sages, Prajapati, replied: 'Our undertaking, O Prajapati, was for the sake of a new Indra — for all of us; but this undertaking of yours is for the sake of desired offspring. Accept, then, this labor which has already borne fruit, and arrange things here as you see fit for the best.'"
