"Then, taking up an army with banners of many kinds, abounding in elephants, horses and chariots, teeming with foot-soldiers, Pandu [moved on]. The king of Magadha, Darva — offender before all heroes, enemy of all the rulers of the earth, guardian of the kingdom of Magadha — was slain in Rajagriha. Then, having seized the treasury, the draft animals and the forces, Pandu, coming to Mithila, defeated the Videhas in battle; so too among the Kashis, the Suhmas and the Pundras, O bull of the Bharatas, by the strength and valor of his own arms he won glory for the Kurus."

Here Pandu's campaign sweeps through the east of India — Magadha, Videha, Kashi, Suhma, Pundra. It is telling that the one struck down is precisely Darva, "enemy of all the rulers of the earth": Pandu subdues not peaceful neighbors but the instigator of discord, restoring peace under the rule of the Kurus. Here it becomes clear that true strength serves the establishment of order: one righteous warrior, subduing troublemakers, grants peace to many. It is also telling that all the glory of these victories is attributed not to Pandu himself but to the line — "he won glory for the Kurus": in the hero's dharma there is no room for self-exaltation; his valor is an offering to the honor of ancestors and household.
