वितथं नोक्तपूर्वं मे स्वैरेष्व् अपि कुतो ऽन्यथा ॥
घृतपूर्णं कुण्डशतं क्षिप्रम् एव विधीयताम् ॥
शीताभिर् अद्भिर् अष्ठीलाम् इमां च परिषिञ्चत ॥

Here Vyasa affirms the inviolability of his word. Telling is his declaration: "I have never spoken falsely, even in jest" -- an image of perfect truthfulness (satya), in which not even in play does untruth leave the lips. In this lies the highest virtue of the ascetic: the power of his boon rests on the unconditional truthfulness of his word; for one who never lies, what has been promised comes to pass without fail. Telling too is the means -- vessels of butter and the sprinkling of water: the sage does not undo what has happened, but turns even the ruined into good, transmuting the lump of flesh into the promised sons. Thus scripture shows that the word of a saint, grounded in truth, holds power even over the distorted course of nature, and that truth is the foundation of all real power.
