Here Janamejaya asks that the names of the hundred sons be recounted in order. The very wish to preserve the names is telling: in the Vedic tradition a name is not an empty sound but a folded destiny and the memory of a lineage. In this lies reverence for continuity: even the names of those fated to perish are carefully preserved by tradition, for every soul in the lineage matters. Thus scripture prepares a solemn roster in which, as we shall see, the very names already carry a foreshadowing of the fate of those who bore them.
