वैशंपायन उवाच
तत्रापि तपसि श्रेष्ठे वर्तमानः स वीर्यवान् ॥
सिद्धचारणसंघानां बभूव प्रियदर्शनः ॥
शुश्रूषुर् अनहंवादी संयतात्मा जितेन्द्रियः ॥
स्वर्गं गन्तुं पराक्रान्तः स्वेन वीर्येण भारत ॥
केषां चिद् अभवद् भ्राता केषां चिद् अभवत् सखा ॥
ऋषयस् त्व् अपरे चैनं पुत्रवत् पर्यपालयन् ॥
स तु कालेन महता प्राप्य निष्कल्मषं तपः ॥
ब्रह्मर्षिसदृशः पाण्डुर् बभूव भरतर्षभ ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tatrāpi tapasi śreṣṭhe vartamānaḥ sa vīryavān ||
siddhacāraṇasaṃghānāṃ babhūva priyadarśanaḥ ||
śuśrūṣur anahaṃvādī saṃyatātmā jitendriyaḥ ||
svargaṃ gantuṃ parākrāntaḥ svena vīryeṇa bhārata ||
keṣāṃ cid abhavad bhrātā keṣāṃ cid abhavat sakhā ||
ṛṣayas tv apare cainaṃ putravat paryapālayan ||
sa tu kālena mahatā prāpya niṣkalmaṣaṃ tapaḥ ||
brahmarṣisadṛśaḥ pāṇḍur babhūva bharatarṣabha ||
Vaishampayana said: "And there, abiding in the most excellent austerity, that valiant one became pleasing to the sight of the hosts of siddhas and charanas — attentive, free of pride, self-controlled, having conquered his senses, eager to reach heaven by his own valor, O Bharata. For some he became a brother, for others a friend, and yet other sages cherished him as a son. And he, after a long time, having attained austerity free of taint, became like a brahmarishi, O bull of the Bharatas."

Here the fruits of Pandu's renunciation appear: the recent conqueror has become a humble ascetic, dear to the saints. His new qualities are telling: "attentive, free of pride, self-controlled" — a king who once ruled the earth now serves and humbles himself. Here is the power of sincere renunciation transforming character: the pride of dominion has given way to an ascetic's meekness, and for this he is received as kin — as brother and as son. It is significant that a kshatriya, through austerity, came to resemble a brahmarishi: austerity raises one above birth, and valor turned toward self-mastery surpasses the valor of a conqueror. Thus the scripture reveals Pandu's ascent before disclosing his new sorrow — childlessness — for the sake of which the whole conversation that follows will unfold.
