Here is shown both the teacher's joy and his hidden purpose. It is telling that, having embraced Arjuna, Drona at once turns his thought to Drupada: in his disciple's skill he sees an instrument of his own revenge. Here is seen how a personal grievance directs even a good deed: for Drona, the training of a perfect warrior is not an end in itself but a means to settle accounts with the friend who wronged him. It is telling that the offense sown by Drupada continues to govern Drona's heart and shape his actions. Thus the scripture reminds us: an unforgiven grievance does not release even the great, weaving personal vengeance into the very act of service; and already in the teacher's joy over Arjuna sounds the grim echo of the war to come.
