किं स्विद् आपूर्यते व्योम जलभारघनैर् घनैः ॥
रङ्गस्यैवं मतिर् अभूत् क्षणेन वसुधाधिप ॥
द्वारं चाभिमुखाः सर्वे बभूवुः प्रेक्षकास् तदा ॥

mandībhūte samāje ca vāditrasya ca nisvane ||
dvāradeśāt samudbhūto māhātmya balasūcakaḥ ||
vajraniṣpeṣasadṛśaḥ śuśruve bhujanisvanaḥ ||
dīryante kiṃ nu girayaḥ kiṃ svid bhūmir vidīryate ||
kiṃ svid āpūryate vyoma jalabhāraghanair ghanaiḥ ||
raṅgasyaivaṃ matir abhūt kṣaṇena vasudhādhipa ||
dvāraṃ cābhimukhāḥ sarve babhūvuḥ prekṣakās tadā ||
Then, when that performance was nearly complete, O Bharata, and the assembly had quieted, and the sound of instruments ceased, from the direction of the gate arose, proclaiming greatness and strength, a slap of hands like the crash of thunder. "Are the mountains splitting? Is the earth cracking? Is the sky filling with clouds heavy with water?" — such became the thought of the arena in an instant, O lord of the earth; and all the spectators then turned toward the gate.

Here, with a fearsome portent, a new force steps onto the arena. Telling is that the slap of Karna's hands, "like the crash of thunder," makes the arena wonder whether mountains are collapsing and the sky is being shaken: his appearance is attended by signs of might not inferior to Arjuna's. Telling is how, at the very moment of the righteous one's triumph, his fated rival enters: Karna — equal to Arjuna in strength, but driven by envy and bound to adharma. Telling too is that neither the spectators nor the reader yet know Karna's secret (he is the Pandavas' brother) — which makes the coming clash all the more tragic. Thus the scripture breaks off Arjuna's triumph at the threshold of the appearance of the one whose fate will be inseparably and sorrowfully entwined with his own.
