दुर्योधन उवाच
आचार्य त्रिविधा योनी राज्ञां शास्त्रविनिश्चये ॥
तत्कुलीनश् च शूरश् च सेनां यश् च प्रकर्षति ॥
यद्य् अयं फल्गुनो युद्धे नाराज्ञा योद्धुम् इच्छति ॥
तस्माद् एषो ऽङ्गविषये मया राज्ये ऽभिषिच्यते ॥
duryodhana uvāca
ācārya trividhā yonī rājñāṃ śāstraviniścaye ||
tatkulīnaś ca śūraś ca senāṃ yaś ca prakarṣati ||
yady ayaṃ phalguno yuddhe nārājñā yoddhum icchati ||
tasmād eṣo 'ṅgaviṣaye mayā rājye 'bhiṣicyate ||
Duryodhana said: "O teacher, threefold is the source of royal dignity for kings by the ruling of the shastras: one born in a royal lineage, a hero, and one who leads an army. If this Phalguna does not wish to fight with a non-king, then he [Karna] shall be anointed by me to kingship in the region of Anga."

Here Duryodhana performs his most skillful and not wholly blameless act — he raises Karna to kingship. Both the wisdom and the calculation of his argument are significant: he rightly invokes the shastra (royal dignity is granted not by birth alone, but also by heroism and by leading an army), and thereby dismantles Kripa's argument of caste. The text reveals here a duality: the deed itself — to raise up the worthy by valor rather than by blood — is just and even noble; but Duryodhana's motive is self-serving — he is securing for himself an unconquerable ally against the Pandavas. It is significant that a deed good in appearance is done for an unworthy end: Duryodhana raises Karna not out of love for justice but out of enmity. Thus the text shows a complexity: a right act from a wrong motive; and from this calculated generosity will be born that loyalty of Karna which becomes one of the peaks and tragedies of the epic.
