"When they had lived there ten nights, Purochana showed them a house named 'Shiva' [auspicious], but inauspicious it was. There those tigers among men entered with their retinue, at Purochana's word, like the guhyakas going to Kailasa. Having examined that dwelling, Yudhishthira, well-versed in all dharma, smelling the odor of fat — ghee mixed with lac — said to Bhimasena: 'This is made of combustibles. It is clear that this house is made of combustibles, O scourge of foes; clearly, hemp and sarja-resin have been brought in for its construction; munja grass, balvaja grass, bamboo and the rest — all of it is sprinkled with ghee; for it has been well made by trusted, skilled craftsmen. This wicked Purochana wishes to burn me, who trusted him.'"

Here the trap is uncovered by Yudhishthira's discernment. The bitter irony of the name is significant: the death-house is called "Shiva" — "auspicious, bringing fortune"; evil cloaks itself in a good name, as poison in sweetness. This is the usual disguise of treachery: destruction dressed as a blessing. Significant too is Yudhishthira's sharpness: he is not deceived by luxury but recognizes the deadly design by the smell of oil and lac — the vigilant discern danger where the careless see only honor. Here is the fruit of viveka (discrimination): the wise test rather than trust appearances; and forewarned by Vidura, Yudhishthira sees clearly what is hidden. Thus the scripture shows that discernment and vigilance are the righteous person's first defense amid treachery.
