वैशंपायन उवाच
विदुरस्य सुहृत् कश् चित् खनकः कुशलः क्व चित् ॥
विविक्ते पाण्डवान् राजन्न् इदं वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
प्रहितो विदुरेणास्मि खनकः कुशलो भृशम् ॥
पाण्डवानां प्रियं कार्यम् इति किं करवाणि वः ॥
प्रच्छन्नं विदुरेणोक्तः श्रेयस् त्वम् इह पाण्डवान् ॥
प्रतिपादय विश्वासाद् इति किं करवाणि वः ॥
कृष्णपक्षे चतुर्दश्यां रात्राव् अस्य पुरोचनः ॥
भवनस्य तव द्वारि प्रदास्यति हुताशनम् ॥
मात्रा सह प्रदग्धव्याः पाण्डवाः पुरुषर्षभाः ॥
इति व्यवसितं पार्थ धार्तराष्ट्रस्य मे श्रुतम् ॥
किं चिच् च विदुरेणोक्तो म्लेच्छवाचासि पाण्डव ॥
त्वया च तत् तथेत्य् उक्तम् एतद् विश्वासकारणम् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
vidurasya suhṛt kaś cit khanakaḥ kuśalaḥ kva cit ||
vivikte pāṇḍavān rājann idaṃ vacanam abravīt ||
prahito vidureṇāsmi khanakaḥ kuśalo bhṛśam ||
pāṇḍavānāṃ priyaṃ kāryam iti kiṃ karavāṇi vaḥ ||
pracchannaṃ vidureṇoktaḥ śreyas tvam iha pāṇḍavān ||
pratipādaya viśvāsād iti kiṃ karavāṇi vaḥ ||
kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśyāṃ rātrāv asya purocanaḥ ||
bhavanasya tava dvāri pradāsyati hutāśanam ||
mātrā saha pradagdhavyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ||
iti vyavasitaṃ pārtha dhārtarāṣṭrasya me śrutam ||
kiṃ cic ca vidureṇokto mlecchavācāsi pāṇḍava ||
tvayā ca tat tathety uktam etad viśvāsakāraṇam ||
Vaishampayana said: "A certain friend of Vidura, a skilled digger, spoke to the Pandavas in private, O king." The digger said: "I have been sent by Vidura, a digger most skilled; I have been bidden to do a service for the Pandavas -- what shall I do for you? Vidura told me in secret: 'You bring good here to the Pandavas, gaining their trust.' On the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight Purochana will set fire at the door of your house; it has been decided that the Pandavas, together with their mother, are to be burned -- such is the decision of Dhritarashtra's son, as I have heard it, O Partha. And something was told to you by Vidura in the secret tongue of the mlecchhas, and you answered, 'so be it' -- this is your proof for trust."

Here Vidura's faithfulness shows itself in deed. It is telling that a warning alone was not enough -- Vidura sends a rescuer too, a skilled digger: true love does not stop at words but acts. Here providence is seen guarding the righteous through devoted people: Vidura, the voice of dharma, becomes the instrument of their deliverance. Telling too is the proof by which the digger vouches for himself: secret words in the tongue of the mlecchhas, known only to Vidura and Yudhishthira -- a wise foresight guarding against a false messenger. Thus the scripture shows that devotion joined with wisdom is doubly effective: Vidura not only foresaw the danger but also equipped the rescue, furnishing it with a reliable token of trust.
