हिडिम्ब उवाच
गर्जितेन वृथा किं ते कत्थितेन च मानुष ॥
कृत्वैतत् कर्मणा सर्वं कत्थेथा मा चिरं कृथाः ॥
बलिनं मन्यसे यच् च आत्मानम् अपराक्रमम् ॥
ज्ञास्यस्य् अद्य समागम्य मयात्मानं बलाधिकम् ॥
न तावद् एतान् हिंसिष्ये स्वपन्त्व् एते यथासुखम् ॥
एष त्वाम् एव दुर्बुद्धे निहन्म्य् अद्याप्रियंवदम् ॥
पीत्वा तवासृग् गात्रेभ्यस् ततः पश्चाद् इमान् अपि ॥
हनिष्यामि ततः पश्चाद् इमां विप्रियकारिणीम् ॥
hiḍimba uvāca

balinaṃ manyase yac ca ātmānam aparākramam ||
jñāsyasy adya samāgamya mayātmānaṃ balādhikam ||
na tāvad etān hiṃsiṣye svapantv ete yathāsukham ||
eṣa tvām eva durbuddhe nihanmy adyāpriyaṃvadam ||
pītvā tavāsṛg gātrebhyas tataḥ paścād imān api ||
haniṣyāmi tataḥ paścād imāṃ vipriyakāriṇīm ||
Hidimba said: "What use to you is empty roaring and boasting, man? Having done all this in deed, then boast; do not delay. And since you think yourself strong, and me devoid of valor — you will learn now, having met me, that I surpass you in strength. I will not harm these yet — let them sleep on at their ease; it is you, o evil-minded one, whom I shall slay now, ill-speaking one, and having drunk your blood from your limbs, then afterward these as well, and then afterward this one, who has done me displeasure."

Here the man-eater reveals the full measure of demonic bloodlust. Telling is his vow to "drink blood": where Bhima spoke of protecting many, the rakshasa dreams only of devouring; two natures lay themselves bare in these very words. Here is the difference between two hosts: the righteous fight for life, the demon for the slaking of his own greed. Telling too is that the man-eater places even his sister on his list of the doomed: evil spares not even its own, its hatred is all-encompassing. Thus scripture shows that the boasting of the righteous and the boasting of the wicked are not to be measured by the same scale: one promises deliverance, the other annihilation; and by Hidimba's own mouth his coming destruction is justified.
