तद् इदं यच् चिकीर्षामि धर्म्यं परमसंमतम् ॥
इष्टं चैव हितं चैव तव चैव कुलस्य च ॥
इष्टानि चाप्य् अपत्यानि द्रव्याणि सुहृदः प्रियाः ॥
आपद्धर्मविमोक्षाय भार्या चापि सतां मतम् ॥
एकतो वा कुलं कृत्स्नम् आत्मा वा कुलवर्धन ॥
न समं सर्वम् एवेति बुधानाम् एष निश्चयः ॥
tad idaṃ yac cikīrṣāmi dharmyaṃ paramasaṃmatam ||
iṣṭaṃ caiva hitaṃ caiva tava caiva kulasya ca ||
iṣṭāni cāpy apatyāni dravyāṇi suhṛdaḥ priyāḥ ||
āpaddharmavimokṣāya bhāryā cāpi satāṃ matam ||
ekato vā kulaṃ kṛtsnam ātmā vā kulavardhana ||
na samaṃ sarvam eveti budhānām eṣa niścayaḥ ||
"This thing I wish to accomplish is righteous, held in the highest esteem, desirable and beneficial for you and for the lineage. Children, wealth, and beloved friends are desirable — but for release from calamity a wife too is fit, such is the opinion of the good. To set on one side the whole lineage, and on the other oneself alone, O increaser of the lineage — these are not equal: such is the resolve of the wise."

Here the wife relies on the recognized law of calamity (āpad-dharma). Telling is the rule she cites: in extreme need it is permitted to sacrifice one for the salvation of many — the lineage weighs more than a single life. Here is the dharma of extraordinary circumstances: what is impermissible in ordinary times may become a duty in the hour of disaster; but always for the higher good, not for self-interest. Telling too is her fearlessness: she herself has volunteered to be that "one" by whom the "many" are saved. Thus the text reveals that there are situations in which love demands the sacrifice of the few for the sake of the whole; and the wife turns the stern law of calamity into an instrument of her devotion.
