समागताः च वीरेण दृष्टपूर्वाः च राक्षसाःsamāgatāḥ ca vīreṇa dṛṣṭapūrvāḥ ca rākṣasāḥ«and rakshasas have met this hero before, and were seen [by him] previously,
बलवन्तः महाकायाः निहताः च अपि अनेकशःbalavantaḥ mahākāyāḥ nihatāḥ ca api anekaśaḥstrong, huge of body, and many times slain [by him];
न तु इदं केषु चित् ब्रह्मन् व्याहर्तव्यं कथं चनna tu idaṃ keṣu cit brahman vyāhartavyaṃ kathaṃ canabut this must never be told to anyone at all, O brahmin,
विद्यार्थिनः हि मे पुत्रान् विप्रकुर्युः कुतूहलात्vidyārthinaḥ hi me putrān viprakuryuḥ kutūhalātfor out of curiosity people would pester my sons, who seek knowledge;
गुरुणा च अननुज्ञातः ग्राहयेत् यं सुतः ममguruṇā ca ananujñātaḥ grāhayet yaṃ sutaḥ mamaand [just as] that which my son might master without his teacher's permission —
न सः कुर्यात् तया कार्यं विद्यया इति सतां मतम्na saḥ kuryāt tayā kāryaṃ vidyayā iti satāṃ matamhe must not perform a deed with that knowledge: such is the opinion of the virtuous»

Here Kunti joins confidence with prudent secrecy. Telling is her demand for silence: the deed must remain hidden, lest people's curiosity disturb the sheltered life of her exiled sons. Wisdom, as revealed here, does not disclose what must be kept: there are deeds done in secret, without seeking glory. Telling, too, is the maxim about knowledge gained without a guru's permission: just as one should not use a skill not sanctioned by one's teacher, so too this deed must be done unknown, without display. Thus the scripture reveals that the valor of the righteous does not seek renown; and secrecy here serves both the caution of the exiles and the purity of a selfless deed.
