तस्मात् तापत्य यत् किं चिन् नृणां श्रेय इहेप्सितम् ॥
तस्मिन् कर्मणि योक्तव्या दान्तात्मानः पुरोहिताः ॥
वेदे षडङ्गे निरताः शुचयः सत्यवादिनः ॥
धर्मात्मानः कृतात्मानः स्युर् नृपाणां पुरोहिताः ॥
जयश् च नियतो राज्ञः स्वर्गश् च स्याद् अनन्तरम् ॥
यस्य स्याद् धर्मविद् वाग्मी पुरोधाः शीलवाञ् शुचिः ॥
tasmāt tāpatya yat kiṃ cin nṛṇāṃ śreya ihepsitam ||
tasmin karmaṇi yoktavyā dāntātmānaḥ purohitāḥ ||
vede ṣaḍaṅge niratāḥ śucayaḥ satyavādinaḥ ||
dharmātmānaḥ kṛtātmānaḥ syur nṛpāṇāṃ purohitāḥ ||
jayaś ca niyato rājñaḥ svargaś ca syād anantaram ||
yasya syād dharmavid vāgmī purodhāḥ śīlavāñ śuciḥ ||
"Hence, O Tapatya, whatever good is sought here by men, for that task one must appoint purohitas of controlled mind. Devoted to the Veda with its six auxiliary sciences, pure, truthful, dharma-souled, and self-controlled -- let such men be the purohitas of kings; and victory is assured for the king, and heaven will follow after, for him whose purohita is a knower of dharma, eloquent, of good conduct, and pure."

Here the image of a worthy purohita is drawn. The list of qualities is telling: learning in the Veda, purity, truthfulness, dharma of soul, self-mastery -- a purohita must be holy, not merely learned. Here it is seen that the spiritual guide of power must himself be pure and controlled: only a righteous man can righteously direct. Telling too is the promise of a double fruit -- victory and heaven: good intercession gives success both in this world and beyond the grave. Thus the scripture shows that the well-being of a kingdom rests on the holiness of its spiritual guide.
