यं प्राप्य विजितात्मानं महात्मानं नराधिपाः ॥
इक्ष्वाकवो महीपाला लेभिरे पृथिवीम् इमाम् ॥
पुरोहितवरं प्राप्य वसिष्ठम् ऋषिसत्तमम् ॥
ईजिरे क्रतुभिश् चापि नृपास् ते कुरुनन्दन ॥
स हि तान् याजयाम् आस सर्वान् नृपतिसत्तमान् ॥
ब्रह्मर्षिः पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ बृहस्पतिर् इवामरान् ॥
yaṃ prāpya vijitātmānaṃ mahātmānaṃ narādhipāḥ ||
ikṣvākavo mahīpālā lebhire pṛthivīm imām ||
purohitavaraṃ prāpya vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam ||
ījire kratubhiś cāpi nṛpās te kurunandana ||
sa hi tān yājayām āsa sarvān nṛpatisattamān ||
brahmarṣiḥ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha bṛhaspatir ivāmarān ||
"Obtaining him, the self-controlled, the great-souled, the Ikshvaku kings, rulers of men, obtained this earth; obtaining the best of purohitas, Vasishtha, foremost of sages, those kings offered sacrifices, O joy of the Kurus. For he, the brahmarishi, performed the sacrifices for all those foremost of kings, as Brihaspati does for the immortals."

Here is revealed the fruit of a king's union with a holy teacher. It is telling that the Ikshvaku kings "obtained the earth" only upon obtaining Vasishtha: dominion comes to those who rest upon the spiritual strength of a brahmin. Telling too is the comparison of Vasishtha with Brihaspati, priest of the gods: as the teacher of the celestials grants them victory, so the purohita grants it to earthly kings. Here is shown the indissoluble bond of brahma and kshatra: the sword achieves success only under the shelter of the altar. Thus the scripture shows that the greatness of the Ikshvaku line rested upon Vasishtha; and their example is an instruction to every king.
