ततो महीतलं तात क्षत्रियेण यदृच्छया ॥
खनताधिगतं वित्तं केन चिद् भृगुवेश्मनि ॥
तद् वित्तं ददृशुः सर्वे समेताः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥
अवमन्य ततः कोपाद् भृगूंस् ताञ् शरणागतान् ॥
निजघ्नुस् ते महेष्वासाः सर्वांस् तान् निशितैः शरैः ॥
आ गर्भाद् अनुकृन्तन्तश् चेरुश् चैव वसुंधराम् ॥
tato mahītalaṃ tāta kṣatriyeṇa yadṛcchayā ||
khanatādhigataṃ vittaṃ kena cid bhṛguveśmani ||
tad vittaṃ dadṛśuḥ sarve sametāḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ||
avamanya tataḥ kopād bhṛgūṃs tāñ śaraṇāgatān ||
nijaghnus te maheṣvāsāḥ sarvāṃs tān niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
ā garbhād anukṛntantaś ceruś caiva vasuṃdharām ||
'Then a certain kshatriya, digging the ground by chance, found wealth in the house of one of the Bhrigus; all the assembled kshatriyas saw that wealth. Then, in anger and contempt, those great archers slew all the Bhrigus who had taken refuge with them, with sharp arrows, cutting them down even to the embryos, and so they passed over the whole earth.'

Here suspicion resolves into a monstrous slaughter. It is telling that the kshatriyas, finding the hidden wealth, in fury exterminate the Bhrigus 'even to the embryos': anger that knows no measure spares not even the unborn. Here is the horror of unchecked vengeance: once kindled, it crosses every boundary and destroys the innocent. Telling too is that those slain had 'taken refuge' — the sanctity of refuge is trampled. Thus the scripture shows where fury without restraint leads; and this very picture must deter Parashara from his own design of universal destruction.
