दूषयन्ति तपस् तेजः क्रोधम् उत्पतितं जहि ॥

Here the forefathers name the plan of vengeance directly as sin. It is significant that they declare the destruction of the worlds a "sin" (papa), not a valiant deed: the annihilation of the innocent for the sake of revenge is evil, whatever name shelters it. Significant, too, is their argument: nothing has harmed their austerity and radiance -- the wronged have no need of vengeance, for their true possession is untouchable. In this is the highest dharma: anger must be "abandoned," for it destroys both the avenger and the innocent, while no evil can harm the righteous. Thus the scripture shows the concluding lesson of the tale -- the restraint of anger; and with this Vasishtha instructs Parashara not to destroy the worlds.
