भीष्म उवाच
न रोचते विग्रहो मे पाण्डुपुत्रैः कथं चन ॥
यथैव धृतराष्ट्रो मे तथा पाण्डुर् असंशयम् ॥
गान्धार्याश् च यथा पुत्रास् तथा कुन्तीसुता मताः ॥
यथा च मम ते रक्ष्या धृतराष्ट्र तथा तव ॥
bhīṣma uvāca
na rocate vigraho me pāṇḍuputraiḥ kathaṃ cana ||
yathaiva dhṛtarāṣṭro me tathā pāṇḍur asaṃśayam ||
gāndhāryāś ca yathā putrās tathā kuntīsutā matāḥ ||
yathā ca mama te rakṣyā dhṛtarāṣṭra tathā tava ||
Bhishma said: 'Enmity with the sons of Pandu is not to my liking in any way; as Dhritarashtra is dear to me, so is Pandu, without doubt; and as the sons of Gandhari, so the sons of Kunti are esteemed by me; and as they must be protected by me, O Dhritarashtra, so must they be by you.'

Here the elder shows an impartial love that does not divide kin. It is significant that Bhishma honors the sons of both brothers equally: a righteous judge knows no favoritism, and his love plays no favorites. Here it is revealed that true seniority protects all equally, not for its own gain. Thus the scripture shows Bhishma's justice; and his word is the voice of dharma amid intrigue.
