ऋषिकेषु तु संग्रामो बभूवातिभयंकरः ॥
तारकामयसंकाशः परमर्षिकपार्थयोः ॥
स विजित्य ततो राजन्न् ऋषिकान् रणमूर्धनि ॥
शुकोदरसमप्रख्यान् हयान् अष्टौ समानयत् ॥
मयूरसदृशान् अन्यान् उभयान् एव चापरान् ॥
स विनिर्जित्य संग्रामे हिमवन्तं सनिष्कुटम् ॥
श्वेतपर्वतम् आसाद्य न्यवसत् पुरुषर्षभः ॥
ṛṣikeṣu tu saṃgrāmo babhūvātibhayaṃkaraḥ ||
tārakāmayasaṃkāśaḥ paramarṣikapārthayoḥ ||
sa vijitya tato rājann ṛṣikān raṇamūrdhani ||
śukodarasamaprakhyān hayān aṣṭau samānayat ||
mayūrasadṛśān anyān ubhayān eva cāparān ||
sa vinirjitya saṃgrāme himavantaṃ saniṣkuṭam ||
śvetaparvatam āsādya nyavasat puruṣarṣabhaḥ ||
With the Rishikas, however, there was an exceedingly fierce battle, like the war of Taraka, between the highest Rishikas and the Partha. Having conquered, O king, the Rishikas at the forefront of battle, he obtained eight horses, colored like the belly of a parrot. Having overcome in battle Himavat together with Nishkuta, and having reached Shveta-parvata, the bull among men took up residence there.

The northern campaign concludes at Shveta-parvata — the White Mountain, the boundary of human limits, at the very gates of the beyond. It is significant that the path of dharma, having begun below, ascends to the purest heights, to the snowy whiteness where the abode lies close to the gods. The eight wondrous horses won in battle are the visible fruit of valor, but the true fruit is different: the attaining of the edge where the earthly borders on the divine. The verse teaches that unwavering fidelity to duty raises a person ever higher, until he stands at the threshold of the sacred, beyond which lies no longer conquest but contemplation.
